A FAMILY TRADITION BUILT ON A PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE

Born in a quiet neighborhood near Boston, Massachusetts, Mark Porter was anything but quiet himself. Energetic, motivated and hard working, he found his calling in the construction industry. At just 15 years old, Mark worked for a cement company framing and pouring basements along the East Coast. In the 1970’s  he relocated  to California where he partnered with a local architect and they started designing and building dream homes and custom remodels. Before long Mark acquired his own General Construction license and Solartecture was born. Mark is a pioneer on the Central Coast specializing in remodeling, additions, general construction, and a very niche market for beautiful sunrooms. His rooms and vast portfolio can be admired all over Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties.  

 

A LEGACY IN THE MAKING 

 

In 1989, Mark welcomed his first and only son, George into the world. George had barely started walking when Mark  had him pushing a wheelbarrow around the job sites. His summers and free weekends were spent learning the trades alongside his dad, building skill, work ethic and character. During his years at Carmel High School, George excelled as a scholar and athlete, becoming an All American lacrosse player, and received several awards from CHS. After high school he pursued an education and lacrosse career with Sonoma State University. It was there that his passion for Environmental Sciences was ignited and the calling towards renewable energy grew loud. George graduated from Sonoma State University, top of his class with a Bachelor’s of Science in Energy Management in 2014. During his time in Sonoma he worked for a local solar company where he learned the solar industry from the ground up. Given his upbringing in the trades it seemed natural for George to pursue his own electrical contractors license and start his own solar company. He relocated to the Central Coast around 2015 and did just that. A few years later, George and Mark made the decision to team up together. 

CONSTRUCTION BASED. ENVIRONMENTALLY DRIVEN.

It was an exciting merge for the father and son duo to be working together again, this time as partners. Mark was running the sunroom and general construction projects while George built up the solar, battery and electrical side of the business. This partnership proved to be the best of both worlds- a new generation’s fresh ideas balanced with old school principles and time tested values. Over the past decade, George has learned every facet of the sunroom and general construction operations preparing for the day when his father could start slowing down. Fast forward to 2025 and Mark is (semi) retired- once a working man, always a working man! and George is overseeing and managing all business operations. His wife helps in the office with small but mighty staff. He runs 2 crews out in the field, some of our guys have been a part of the company for over 20 years. Still a family owned and operated business, a son proud to carry on this legacy and make it his own, George is extremely proud of the Solartecture name and what it stands for; integrity, family, trust, quality.
